Bessie’s Place: A Place to Call Home

Volunteers and friends gathered in late July to celebrate the official opening of Bessie’s Place, a permanent low-income housing opportunity for young ladies age 18-24 who have aged out of foster care.  Bessie’s Place is a collaboration between Bessie’s Angels, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating, empowering and nurturing young women as they transition into a new phase of their lives, and the Cuyahoga Land Bank.

Bessie’s Place, which can accommodate up to six young women, was made possible by a host of generous donors and dedicated volunteers who worked for many months to fully renovate the two-family home in East Cleveland.  The Cuyahoga Land Bank transferred title to the house once renovations were complete to specifications.  The Cuyahoga Land Bank also awarded Bessie’s Angels one of its 11 Collaboration Grants in 2017 to help the organization realize it’s goal.

“We are grateful to many, but nothing compares to the gratitude I personally feel for the support given by the Cuyahoga Land Bank,” says Tonya Perkins-Stoudermire, Founder of Bessie’s Angels.  “It’s because of the Land Bank staff’s patience, faith and support that we are still standing.  Bessie’s Angels will always refer to the Land Bank as a life-changing organization.”
